Workshop Details:

*Contemporary Dance ~ Master Class with Jennifer Camp

This Contemporary Dance class is based on a fusion of classical ballet and modern technique. Camp’s approach incorporates a free, full body movement style initiated from spiraling from the torso and articulate spine work, while combining complex leg and footwork, with a focus on musicality and expressiveness of the body.

The class will begin with a classical ballet barre, then transition into contemporary center work, which will include improvisation, and choreography from Camp’s repertoire.

*A Re-Education of the Body the work of Barbara Mahler grounded in the principles of Klein Technique with Rebecca Alson-Milkman
Tuesday, July 17th and Friday, July 20th 11am-1pm

A Re-Education of the Body is a way to explore one’s capacity to move, bringing insight into the workings of one’s body. It brings efficiency, increased facility, and creativity. The work done in class facilitates process, and from the openness to process comes an openness to the wealth of options we often overlook – in our work, in our lives, in ourselves.

In this class, we aim at releasing the muscles so we can get down to the deepest tissue, the bone. When the bones are aligned we become connected, we become powerful and strong. We align the bones by using the muscles most responsible for the transfer of forces through the body – the psoas, the hamstrings, the external rotators, and the pelvic floor. We do not work to “exercise” these muscle but rather to “wake them up”; to use them for support for and realignment of the bones. Movement, and the treatment of each individual student’s body, mind and spirit with kindness, respect and generosity is our ultimate goal. And finally and most importantly, the body does not exist alone but in connection to the ground, the space, and to others.

(taken from writings by Barbara Mahler and Susan Klein.)

*Contemporary Technique & Somatic Concepts with Stephanie Nugent

With a foundation in traditional modern dance forms, a sound understanding of human anatomy and inspiration from somatic practices including anusara yoga, contact improvisation, and counter technique, Stephanie Nugent has been performing, teaching and choreographing contemporary dance and dance improvisation for over twenty years.

Join Nugent in this intermediate/advanced class where you will be challenged to engage in kinetically ecstatic and virtuosic dancing by releasing into space and committing to the process of dancing. The class consists of somatic-based exercises designed to engage the kinesthetic body/mind, while freeing oneself from excess tension. Students will learn to fall through space in every direction, creating endless possibilities for direction, redirection and counter-direction.

*Improvisation Workshop with David Lakein
Presence Perception Performance
What is presence?
When do transitions happen; do they exist?
How does being watched change our awareness?

We explore different pathways to how we can enliven our presence and engage our perception, as inspiration ebbs and flows and material develops and transforms. This nourishes our investigation of which compositional options are available to us while improvising; especially when feel overwhelmed by an overabundance of stimuli. As we experiment with varying approaches to locating a physical attitude and placing a specific intention, we gain an entrance into examining the roles we embody—functional-experiential-narrative. All in order to uncover what motivates-supports-drives us to communicate states-emotions-thoughts with the world.

Is anyone really watching?
Why should they?

This workshop is for all adventurers who want to probe their understandings about the improvising body/-/mind and question their assumptions about the performative moment.
It is open to movers and performers from all disciplines and training backgrounds, for amateurs and professionals.

*Contact Improv: A Practice of Physical Inquiry with Daniel Bear Davis

Inquiry: 1. a seeking or request for truth, information, or knowledge. 2. an investigation
Inquire After: to ask about the state of health or condition of.

In this class we direct our physical inquiry to the principles operating in weight exchange, counterbalance, and support situations. We will use improvisational investigations as well as proposed partnering motifs as strategies for integrating new possibilities into the dance. By binging a respect for our given anatomy to on-going inquiry into the possibilities of an unfolding moment, we will safely and skillfully explore a range of physical encounters. By inviting the spirit of inquiry into each moment, every touch, every invitation, every weight transfer unfolds in a dynamic nexus of possibility and choice.
